Why Drinking Water After Your Massage Matters

You’ve probably heard your massage therapist say it at the end of every session: “Drink lots of water today.” It isn’t just small talk — it’s one of the simplest ways to take good care of yourself after bodywork. Here’s why I say it.

Massage gets things moving

During your massage, we stimulate blood flow and support lymphatic circulation — your body’s natural cleanup crew that helps clear everyday metabolic byproducts from tissues. Drinking water afterward is a simple way to support your body’s normal processes while everything settles.

Hydrated muscles are happier muscles

Your muscles just got a real workout — even though you were the one relaxing. Massage loosens tight spots, calms trigger points, and gets circulation moving through tissues. Sipping water through the rest of your day is just good aftercare: it supports your body’s normal recovery while those freshly worked muscles settle in.

It may ease that next-day achiness

Ever felt a little achy or “flu-like” the day after a deep massage? I have — I caught the full “massage flu” once and learned the hard way that hydration is not optional. That groggy, heavy feeling is your body recalibrating after deep work. I can’t promise water prevents it entirely, but in my experience, clients who hydrate well tend to feel the benefits of their session instead of the soreness.

It supports the relaxation response

Massage shifts your nervous system from fight-or-flight into rest-and-digest. Dehydration works against that — headaches, fatigue, crankiness. A glass of water helps you hold onto that calm, grounded feeling a little longer.

How much should you drink?

There’s no magic number, but a good rule of thumb: an extra few glasses beyond your normal intake on the day of your session, and keep sipping steadily through the evening. Herbal tea counts too — just go easy on caffeine and alcohol right after a session, since both can be dehydrating.

Make it a ritual

Keep a water bottle nearby when you get home. Sip slowly. Let hydration be part of the aftercare — your body just did good work, and this is how you honor it.

Serenity awaits. ✨
